Love Thy Neighbour

My ma-in-law is a very helpful lady. She is always looking out for her relatives and neighbours.
So, today, when the nearly-invalid lady next door started howling in the morning, ma-in-law rushed out of the house to find out what was wrong. The cause of all that yowling was apparently that none of the old lady's maids had turned up. Ma went along the para for one of the maids. The truant maid could not be traced. So, ma-in-law backtracked to the old lady's place. And what does the old lady make Ma do? Wash thakurer bason(utensils meant for offering prasad to the Gods)!!! There were around 15 or 16 of these utensils and the old lady even admonished Ma by saying 'Theek kore majo!'('Scrub them well!') What a mean old thing! Why do these oldies think that the way to God's heart is by inflicting pain (and humiliation) on their fellow human beings? Wish they knew better. Meanwhile, I have requested ma-in-law not to bat an eyelid when this old lady starts howling again.
